An analogy of (Upper) Middle Management at a recent company that my boss consulted:
-The top rolls represent
the new folks hired by a Vice President, who don't know what they're supposed to be
doing. As a result, they often do nothing.
-The squashed rolls represent the more experienced talent whose workload has doubled, due to the lack of help. They support the structure.
-The supporting rolls have no idea why their job has gotten more demanding, and the
top rolls have no idea why their job is so easy.
-Only the VP, seeing the whole
picture, has the ethic responsibility to sort things out... before everything
topples over.
-If the VP chooses not to alleviate the pressure, then it is the ethical responsibility of people like the CEO to fix what's not working.
