Street Art of Welling Court

It was a brisk Fall morning, so Lewis and I jogged through our (new) neighborhood.  We encountered a quadrant of beautiful "street art".  Evidently, a part of Astoria called Welling Court is the county's sole participant in the WorldPride Mural Project to support the LGBT community.  Done by 50 local and international artists, the graffiti murals are public art installations for New York City.  Each year since 2009, participating Astorian buildings allow the artwork to beautify their walls/community.  Lewis and I photographed them.  These were painted in 2019 to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which finally prompted overdue gay rights in America (supposedly the Land of the Free).  Formerly named Green Oak Street, Welling Court is a small historic street in Old Astoria, but its name is used loosely to denote an area of several streets adorned with art.  It's amazing to see fantastic street art juxtaposed with a historic district.  These images brighten our world, and we hope they brighten your day, too.

Seen above, the corner property was used to vividly portray Love.  Seen below, even a short stretch of wall was invigorated for passersby.  The antique fire alarm box was colored, too.

Seen above, the pointed corner is indicative of Old Astoria's historic streets that defy NYC's grid pattern.  Read about it here:

The centerpiece of that street art installation is an image of Mahatma Gandhi.  Lewis and I visited his home in India, and you can see it here:

The scene reminded me of our visit to the Wynwood District in Miami, Florida: a showplace for street art.  See it here:
