On today's news, the governor of New York State announced "big changes" for Pennsylvania Station. The governor has been promising to address NYC's outdated infrastructure--like La Guardia Airport--for years. Yet, it never happened.
These were the commentator's comments:
"Penn Station has been ridiculed as overcrowded, confusing, outdated, and generally gross. It is a hub for the MTA subway, Amtrak trains, and New Jersey Transit. Tens of thousands of people travel through it every day. A plan to fix things has been suggested for years." (So why hasn't it been addressed by tax-paid officials or fare-paid train officials?)
Here's what some commuters said:
"I need some more air in here. Cleaner facilities, less crowded. Maybe some eateries like at Grand Central."
"They could afford to do a lot better. They really could."
"It's the biggest train station in Manhattan. Yet, there's no place to sit! People are always sitting on the floor, up against pillars and walls. Unless you want to pay to sit in Starbucks."
At that point, the newscaster interjected, "I've been working for this studio for 18 years, and for all of those years, we've talked about such proposed changes. How is this any different?" He laughed at the absurdity in NYC. I didn't laugh.
In many ways, America's uncaring inaction resembles an obstinate Soviet government. What is the year that you're reading this? Has work begun on Penn Station or La Guardia Airport? Probably not.
